Purpose:
The goal is to build a cohesive group among the participants, as well to increase their social skills, self-esteem, and cope with internal issues regarding their sense of who they are.
Week One: Tuesday May 6, 2008
Set ground rules, introductions, list expectations of the group, overview of program, development of group dynamics, and open forum.
Week Two: Tuesday May 13, 2008
Sharing own feelings/experiences (self-image, machismo, homophobia, religion, family values, social expectations, racism, etc.)
Week Three: Tuesday May 20, 2008
Exploring your sexuality (physical attraction, flirting, dating, and sex)
Week Four: Tuesday May 27, 2008
Meeting people (setting boundaries, personal space, taking risks, and sharing experiences)
Week Five: Tuesday June 3, 2008
Being in control (communication and negotiating skills, drugs and alcohol, peers pressure/support, and the environment)

Building relationships (intimacy, comparability, sharing goals, dealing with differences, compassion, commitment, domestic violence, marriage?)

ALMA'S TRIPLE "A" SUPPORT
GROUP:
A.A.A. (in Spanish: Amigos Apoyando Amigos, in English: Friends Supporting Friends)
support group which takes place every six months in a weekly basis, welcoming
ten to twenty participants each week from all over the Chicago land area. There
is one group coordinator in charge of the weekly topics and making sure the safety
and tranquility of each participant is present at every session. Emphasis is
placed on first time participants due to the need for more attention and support
on a particular case. Here we determine which topics to consider for future sessions.
ALMA is proud to claim, several outstanding acknowledgements over the years from
various participants of this group after they have completed this sessions, including
the one from our new and first executive director.
ALMA Scholarship
ALMA is pleased to announce that it will award $1,000 scholarships in 2008 to two qualified Latino males. Since ALMA’s inception in 1989, the organization’s mission has been to empower Latino gay, bisexual, and questioning men by providing support, advocacy, and leadership opportunities, through innovative cultural programming. The ALMA scholarship is the unique embodiment of this mission.

PUBLIC OUTREACH AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS:
ALMA serves more then 150 members and over 200 friends of the organization thru
its outreach programs determined at board retreats, including educational forums
and workshops, social and fundraising events, gay youth scholarship program,
collaborations with libraries, community centers and other gay organizations,
and an interactive live cable television show on CAN-TV's channel 21 every four
Friday at 6:30pm which includes topics currently affecting the Latino LGBTQ community.

Encuentro Latino: Grupo continuo en el proceso de ser
formado para ciclos de seis semanas en el Otoño, el
Invierno, y la Primavera; Sábados de 11 de la mañana a
12 de la tarde.
El grupo proveerá un ambiente seguro, nutrir, y sin
prejuicios para hombres de varias culturas Hispanas
luchando con preguntas sobre su orientación sexual. El
grupo también proveerá una oportunidad para explorar
asuntos relacionados con la cuestión de salir a la
luz, la homofobia interna (ideas negativas que hemos
adoptado hacia personas que se identifican como gay,
lesbianas, o homosexuales), frustraciones sobre varias
diferencias étnicas/culturales, barreras entre el
idioma Español y el Ingles, tensiones o discriminación
hacia personas Latinas dentro de la comunidad gay,
lesbiana, y transgénero (personas transexuales o
travesti), y la cuestión de cómo integrar nuestra
orientación sexual con nuestras expectativas
culturales e ideas religiosas a pesar del hecho que
uno se identifique como gay, bisexual, o derecho.

ALMA launches support group
“Amigos Apoyando Amigos” addressing the needs of Spanish speaking gay, bisexual and questioning men
March 12, 2007. Chicago, IL: Engaging gay, bisexual, and questioning Spanish-speaking men in honest dialogue, the Association of Latino Men for Action (ALMA) is pleased to announce its upcoming support group. Starting March 22, "Amigos Apoyando Amigos/Friends Helping Friends" will provide an opportunity for men to discuss their experiences, relationships and identities as members of Latino Gay, Bisexual and Questioning (GBQ) communities.
Founded in 1989, ALMA is a non-profit organization committed to developing support, visibility, and leadership in the gay, bisexual and questioning Latino community of metropolitan Chicago. Each year, the organization sponsors numerous workshops and social events, coordinates a youth scholarship program, operates a public television show, and engages in individual and community-building promotions, among other activities.
Honoring its commitment to nurturing relationships and empowerment, Amigos Apoyando Amigos is a leading program initiative of A.L.M.A. Goals of the group include enhancing self-understanding, promoting group cohesion, and developing community visibility. Through intimate discussions of personal experiences, identities, relationships, and aspirations, the group is oriented towards enhancing self esteem and leadership skills of GBQ Latino men. The experiences of Carlos Castillon, the first Executive Director of A.L.M.A., testify to the significance of the Amigos Apoyando Amigos group process; Castillon began as a member of A.L.M.A., and through participation in the group and additional activities was enabled to hone the skills to assume leadership of the organization.
